about

Motel tells the story of life in a motel through the characters who inhabit it, the objects that define it, and the space that surrounds it. The story takes place over the course of a single day, and it attempts to capture the humanity of the moment and the eternity of that which compels, destroys, connects, and revives the human spirit.

Track Name: The Mirror
You look in the mirror,
But you can’t find the sun,
Cause your lover’s off livin’,
With a wealthier one,
Now your heart’s on the table,
But your mind’s on the run.
And it’s lost its direction,
And there’s nowhere to hide,
And a stranger sits naked,
On your bedside,
And you’re all out of money,
And a smile hurts your pride.
And they call you “the madman,”
“Another lost soul,”
You can ignite the engine,
But the tires won’t roll.
You smell something burning,
Hell’s taken its toll.
And your friends stop responding,
To all of your calls,
They say that they’re busy,
Now you’re staring at walls.
And the freezer is empty,
Death lurks in your halls.
And when he comes he comes knocking,
You can’t turn away,
Take the back stairwell,
He’ll meet you halfway,
You can ask him to leave,
But he’s come here to stay.
He’s looking back in the mirror,
With a gun and a grin,
And he knows you’re not guilty,
But he’ll force you to sin,
Like a sword-wielding puppet,
Turning water to gin.
Track Name: The Amateur
Oh stage! I’ll never really be your friend.
Let’s be honest with each other,
We never really let each other in.
I’ve seen the footage of Marvin Gaye playin’,
I’ve seen the footage of Lady Day singin’,
I’ve seen the footage of Neil Young ragin’,
I’ve seen the footage of Joni contemplatin’,
Oh stage! I’ll never really be your friend.
Let’s be honest with each other,
We never really let each other in.
I’ll write you a letter,
I’ll write you a song,
I’ll write you a letter,
I’ll write you ‘till I’m gone.
Track Name: Flood
Evening alone,
I’m feeling uneasy.
When the moon hit the stone,
And I thought you would need me.
All it took was one shake,
For the years of our youth to break up,
And shatter to bits,
Like glass at a concert.
I stare at the rips,
Of my favorite t-shirt,
That you’d wear time to time
When you’d ask me, when you’d ask me to wake up.
It’s raining outside,
There’s a flood in my kitchen.
I’ll have to clean it alone,
That’s just how it’s been,
And every night it’s that way,
I like to think of our lives without makeup.
Track Name: How We Want It
Well I guess I’ll find you,
‘Cross the city line.
I guess I’ll find you,
‘Cross the city line.
I hope you’ll find,
What you’re lookin’ for.
I hope you’ll find,
What you’re lookin’ for.
I don’t want to know your religion,
Don’t seek the touch of your hand,
Don’t fear your words on the perdition,
To which you claim we’re all damned.
I want love when I want it!
I want love when we want it!
We want love and you want (everything)
Whatcha lookin’ for? (everything)
Track Name: The Realization
I needed you around,
To see what I had found,
An eagle in midflight,
The Sycamore ignite,
Come beckoning their kin,
Born bright from Winter’s sin,
So warm upon my skin,
My blood is bourbon thin,
Your faith is caving in,
Your head begins to spin,
And echoes with the sound,
So soft against the brow,
So hard upon the bow,
So come on with me now,
I’ll swear to show you how…
I needed you around,
To see what I had found.
Track Name: Cynthia
Cynthia,
We had the right intentions,
When we kissed at the office party.
I was wrong to ignore your attention,
You were gone before the break of day.
What’s up?
How are you?
Can’t help that I still think of you.
Cynthia,
I never wanted answers,
When you spoke of your drunken daughter.
I never knew how to address your cancer,
And you were gone before I knew what to say.
Angels came,
To take you,
Were you really as good as I remember you?
Track Name: Hold
Hold on before walking out that door,
I wish I could give you more.
And sometimes I’ll take the long way home,
I only know how to be alone.
But I don’t want to be alone,
No I don’t want to be alone.
I’ll wait with the people in the square,
I know you like it there.
It’s getting cold and the sun is going down,
I’ll try to be around.
I never meant to make you frown,
No I don’t want to bring you down.
Hold on, I am telling you the truth!
I never felt my youth.
What will I say when I see you the next time?
I only know that I’ve been blind.
And I don’t want to be blind,
To love that’s mine!
To the love that’s mine,
All mine...
Track Name: What It Is
You got everything I need,
I promise that I’m all that I seem.
You got a way to wear your pain,
I got a pain inside my brain.
Summer brings bad news from Houston:
See a man at the end of his line!
If you’re gonna write a letter,
You’d better address it soon,
‘Cause I might just die here in this room.
Track Name: Sterile Robes
No chorus of hallelujah,
Will free you from that bed.
No rosary will improve you,
For sterile robes that name you “sick in the head.”
Were you true in your contributions,
When they came to take you away?
Claiming gods in their revolutions,
Forewent what you tried to pay?
Did you save your sweetest words?
Did you carry them down with you so deep in the dirt?
Found you naked in the clearest daylight,
Facedown on the gravel stone.
So strange when I think of you drivin’,
Laughing with me all the way home.
About a friend you found enchanting,
About adults with our hearts of stone.
Did you know your final hour?
Did you carry it down with you so deep in the dirt?
Track Name: For Clarity
Why can’t I hold you from where I stand?
I’m just a man who wants you by my hand.
Why can’t I find a little clarity in my mind?
If I seem at all distracted by the light of night…
Why are so many people crossing by my way?
They do not stay.
Not for me, except I know you just may.
Track Name: Cigarette Smoke
Bury me in cigarette smoke and,
Your eyes will open,
Mixed in cinnamon light, I fight to keep the light on.
Where have our thighs gone?
Twistin’, touchin’ on the front lawn,
Get it on.
Where will our hearts roam?
Beatin’, heatin’ up the comin’ dawn,
Get it on.
Pardon me, for sleeping with the light on,
My gate is open,
Mixed in lavender light, I fight to keep the light on.
Where have our knees gone?
Twistin’, touchin’ on the back lawn,
Get it on.
Where will our hearts roam?
Beatin’, heatin’ up the comin’ dawn,
Get it on.
