Ruby Tail Lights

by Hank Midnight

/
1.
Take time Three little words that live beyond light and water I love you sweet smell of pine Tail lights Flicker like ruby sequencers lit up on pub night What’s a Hollywood fantasy? Someone, tell me how to find the lavender pier near the nude beach Near the nude beach Late night Three little words that live beyond dinner party small talk I want you right here Let’s waste time In small hour light, you claim that pink drinks taste better As if I knew Someone tell me how to find the lavender pier near the nude beach Near the nude beach

about

Ruby Tail Lights started with an electric guitar track that I was on the verge of abandoning. Sometimes when I hit a wall with a song idea or an instrument part, I will bus that track to a stereo auxiliary track in Pro Tools; then I'll bus that auxiliary track to a stereo audio track and hit record. I'll layer on plug-in effects and will modulate their parameters from the auxiliary track as it prints the original track's signal to the stereo audio track. Sometimes, when I really want to "crush" a track to achieve a desired sonic color or texture, I'll repeat this modulating printing process several times. After I print, I delete everything that came before the print. It feels liberating to delete as I go and makes the work feel lighter and fresher for new colors and textures and shapes. I used this technique to create the opening shimmering and pulsing guitar effect on "Ruby Tail Lights". Onto that print, I added a ukulele part in a quintuple meter and built the song up from there. I sent it to my childhood friends, executive producer/manager Johnny Esposito and producer/arranger Matthew Fishman, both of whom liked the song but encouraged me to continue developing the vocals. That's where the double-panned harmonies come from -- their encouragement! Matthew Fishman is responsible for my favorite part of the song: the clapping that introduces the second verse. I used a non-linear reverb effect on my guitar and played it with a slide to create a swelling sensation at the end of the song. The hope is that listeners will feel that they've arrived at the lavender pier near the nude beach with the song's protagonist.
